The article reviews the main directions of development of monitoring the ecological state of forests. It is based on the Internet of Things (IoT) technology the application of which will be considered in the framework of forest monitoring in comparison with traditional monitoring methods. The difficulties faced by system developers are also considered and the prospects for the development of IoT technology in the field of environmental monitoring which are included in the modern forest monitoring concept of the future “Forest4.0” are highlighted.
