the article is dedicated to Mikhail Nikiforovich Katkov (November 1, 1818 – July 20, 1887) – Russian publicist, publisher, literary critic, editor of the newspaper “Moskovskie Vedomosti”, founder of Russian political journalism, influential supporter of conservative views. For three decades of the 19th century, according to philosopher Konstantin Leontiev, he was the leader of “protective Russia”. It was Katkov who was an ideologist, a propagandist, and, to a large extent, a political leader who put his ideas into practice. Confronting revolutionaries, separatists, and liberals at once, Mikhail Nikiforovich managed to play an outstanding role in preserving the territorial integrity and inviolability of the traditional political system of Russia.
