The article examines the problem of changing the content of the intelligentsia class in the conditions of the capitalist mode of production. L.E. Obolensky in his article "Does the intelligentsia represent a social class?" he emphasized the urgency of this problem not only for the Russian Empire, but also for other European countries. The author analyzes the privileged position of the intelligentsia in society, compares the differences between mental and physical labor, and finds the origins of competition within the intelligentsia. Special attention is paid to the diversity of interests and views within this social group.
