The thesis analyzes the scene of Nikolai Rostov's visit to a military hospital in Leo Tolstoy's novel War and Peace. The specifics of the hospital space, consisting of soldiers' and officers' wards, are revealed. Particular attention is paid to the consideration of typhus and vanity – two diseases occurring in parallel in this space. Based on the medical concepts of the 19th century about miasmas, as well as the mimetic theory of René Girard, the logic of the embodiment and functioning of these ailments is studied.
