Juniperus excelsa M. Bieb., is a relict of the Tertiary period, a representative of the ancient Eastern Mediterranean vegetation. The species mainly grows in erosional landscape elements (watersheds, rocks, screes), performing important soil-protecting and habitat-forming functions, but is currently experiencing a reduction in range due to anthropogenic pressure and climate change. The article presents the results of a study of the territorial distribution and growth characteristics of natural plantings of J. excelsa in the south of Russia. A tendency towards climate aridization in the areas of growth, an increase in average annual temperatures and a decrease in precipitation has been revealed, which poses a threat to the sustainability of species populations. It is noted that a significant part of natural plantings of J. excelsa are part of specially protected natural areas of varying importance, but large tracts of the Abrau Peninsula and the Kizil Tash mountain range do not have conservation status. The materials of the article can be used to develop measures for the conservation and restoration of J. excelsa populations in the South of Russia.
