The Central Black Soil Region has historically been Russia's granary, possessing unique black soil resources. However, intensive agricultural use over the past centuries has led to the emergence of a complex of serious problems that threaten the long-term fertility and ecological stability of agricultural landscapes. The main problems of agricultural land use in the Central Black Soil Region are considered, in particular, soil degradation (water and wind erosion, humus loss, compaction), agrochemical pollution, unbalanced land use structure, and the negative impact of climate change. Based on the analysis of the current state, the authors propose directions for transitioning to sustainable and resource-saving land use, including the introduction of adaptive landscape farming systems, the biologization of agriculture, and the improvement of legal and economic mechanisms for land protection.
