Abstract:
Abandoned agricultural lands are overgrown by successional processes and the vegetation gradually changes. Ornithological studies were conducted on four fallow lands during the nesting period of birds (May-June) from 2003 to 2021. The fallow lands are located in the forest-steppe zone of the Voronezh Region. We found 8 to 10 bird species in the studied habitats. To study the effect of the vegetation cover of fallow lands on the density of bird populations during the nesting period, we selected the most abundant species: the gray warbler, the field lark, and the meadow pipit. The population density of these species varied over the course of 18 observation seasons. However, the overall trend was consistent: the highest number of individuals of each species was observed during the initial stages of fallow land colonization, followed by a sharp decline (Alauda arvensis L.) or gradual decline (Sylvia communis Lath. and Saxicola rubetra L.) as the woody vegetation expanded on the fallow lands.
