Abstract:
Solonetz soils occur locally within the forest-steppe zone and form areas characterized by unfavorable edaphic conditions, including alkaline reaction and disturbed water regime. Such conditions may contribute to the formation of weakened forest stands. Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) is the principal forest-forming species of the region and grows on various soil types, including chernozem and solonetz soils. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of solonetz soils on the growth and condition of pedunculate oak stands in the Shipov Forest (Voronezh Region). The assessment was carried out on sample plots located at different distances from a solonetz clearing based on main forest inventory parameters. On sample plots No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4, associated with soils showing signs of solonetz features, the mean diameter of pedunculate oak was 27.6 cm (Plot No. 1), 26.7 cm (Plot No. 3) and 27.0 cm (Plot No. 4); mean height was 13.6 m, 18.0 m and 18.2 m, respectively; growing stock amounted to 230, 215 and 236 m³/ha. Stand productivity corresponded to site quality classes III–IV. Comparison of forest inventory indicators suggests the formation of less productive stands under solonetz soil conditions compared with areas characterized by more favorable edaphic conditions.
