Abstract:
This study examines the growth characteristics of common hazel seedlings (as an understory species) depending on the forest conditions at which the seeds are collected. This species forms the basis of forest understory growth, regardless of the dominant tree species, meaning it can thrive in pine stands, which pose the greatest fire hazard. An experimental site was established for the study, where seed germination rates, seedling growth dynamics, and survival were determined. It was found that common hazel seed germination significantly depends on the forest conditions at the collection site. The best germination rates were observed for seeds collected in fresh oak groves (TLU C2D) – 80 %, likely due to the more complete ripening of the fruit in rich soils. The lowest germination rate was recorded for seeds from fresh suboria (TLU B2) – 38 %. Moreover, seedling survival in the first and second years of life did not significantly differ depending on seed origin, indicating the species' high adaptability to new conditions. Therefore, to develop highly productive common hazel crops in the study region, it is advisable to use seeds collected in the most favorable growing conditions (TLU C2D), which ensures the production of larger-sized planting material.
