The article presents the results of research on artificial forest plantations in the foothills of eastern North Caucasus in the territory of Karachaevo-Cherkese Republic. Considered the issues of conservation and enhancement of biodiversity of plant communities through the creation of mixed crops of tree species. The state, growth and productivity of oak tree plantations of cherrywood, common ash, short-leafed maple, white maple and other species created in felling, former agricultural lands and as part of the state protective forest strip «Cherkesk - Elista - Volgograd» were studied. It was shown that artificial afforestation not only performs protective and climate-regulating functions, but also contributes to the formation of sustainable biogeozoals with a high level of species diversity. Particular attention is paid to the influence of crop composition, cultivation and care methods on environmental sustainability and plant structure. The results of the work can be used in the planning of reforestation activities in mountain and pre-mountain regions of Southern Russia.
