This article presents research findings from Japanese nurseries exploring advanced traditional technologies for producing planting stock for ornamental trees. Common characteristics of these businesses, including small spaces, family continuity and centuries-old traditions, the use of specialized equipment, and the development of large-sized trees in the traditional Niwaki style, are identified. Comparisons are made with Russian and Western European nursery practices regarding key operations: digging, packaging, replanting, and pruning. The activities of the Japanese Planting Stock Producers Association are briefly discussed.
