The article analyzes the role of the Russian Orthodox Church in providing assistance to those in need during the famine of 1891-1892 in the Voronezh province. Attention is drawn to the fact that the church has always seen its main activity as helping those who need it. In Russia in the 19th century, there was a rather rapid growth of charitable activities, the center of which was the church. During the reign of Alexander II (1855-1881), the church was entrusted with the task of not only providing direct assistance to those in need, but also building and maintaining church infrastructure in good condition, building schools, hospitals, almshouses, orphanages, etc. Attention is drawn to the fact that the main form of charitable institutions were almshouses, but there were also hospice houses. Their main task was to provide food and shelter to those in need, and the children were provided with school. The main forms of charitable activity of the Orthodox Church were assistance to the disabled and war veterans, their families, the elderly, the seriously ill, people with mental disorders, the unemployed, orphans, the illiterate, the poor, the hungry and victims of disasters. It was the church that was one of the first to draw public attention to the worsening weather conditions in 1890-1891, which subsequently led to massive crop failures and famine, and it was the church that led the way in organizing assistance to those in need in the Voronezh province.
