This article examines the pervasive use of obscene lexicon (mat) across various strata of contemporary Russian society. The analysis encompasses a range of historical, sociocultural, sociobiological, and related factors contributing to this phenomenon. The author posits that the prevalence of profanity serves as an indicator of a profound cultural and social crisis. The article concludes with a set of recommendations aimed at rectifying the current situation.
