this article examines the protection of private forests in the Russian Empire after the abolition of serfdom. A characteristic feature of this period was the devastation of forests by both peasants and landowners, their owners. The reasons for this phenomenon are discussed, including, on the one hand, the peasants' need for forests as a resource and their continued consideration of them as common property. On the other hand, landowners, left without free labor, were motivated to quickly cut down forests for sale. The article analyzes the first law on the protection of privately owned forests in Russian history, its main provisions, advantages, and disadvantages.
