DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSTICS OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM FAULTS: SEPARATING COMBUSTION CHAMBER SEALING DEFECTS AND INSUFFICIENT PUMP PERFORMANCE

Abstract:
The article addresses the problem of differential diagnostics of two classes of cooling system faults leading to engine overheating: combustion chamber sealing defects (cracks, gasket burnout) and insufficient coolant pump performance. A method is proposed based on joint analysis of cooling system pressure, temperature dynamics at characteristic points, and volumetric flow rate estimation via heat balance, considering the flow through the passenger compartment heater core. Quantitative criteria are introduced: gas breakthrough index (CPI) and pump performance index (PPI). A decision rule is developed for four states: normal, gas breakthrough, pump fault, combined defect. Experiment on 40 engines confirmed classification accuracy of 90%. The method requires no disassembly and minimal additional equipment.
