Abstract:
The present study examined the activity of key antioxidant enzymes: catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the leaves of various varieties of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) under salt stress conditions. Spectrophotometric analysis revealed alterations in enzyme activity in plant tissues subjected to salt stress, as compared to control samples. Results demonstrate that the responses of leaf enzyme activity to stress conditions exhibit variety-specific patterns and are influenced by the ionic strength of the salt solution. Most varieties displayed increased catalase activity, indicating the activation of the primary enzymatic pathway for hydrogen peroxide detoxification. However, one variety showed inhibited CAT activity, potentially indicating greater susceptibility to oxidative damage. Modifications in APX and SOD activity levels in the experimental samples suggest the possible activation of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle as an alternative mechanism for hydrogen peroxide detoxification.
